Orthomosaic: what it is and how to use it

The georeferenced, distortion-corrected site image — the base layer for measuring on the map.

An orthomosaic is a single top-down image of your whole site, stitched from every photo and corrected so that scale is uniform across the frame. Unlike a normal aerial photo, you can measure directly on it.

Why it's not just a photo

Ordinary photos have perspective distortion — objects lean, and scale changes across the image. An orthomosaic removes that using the elevation model, so a distance measured in one corner means the same as one measured in the other.

What you'll do with it

  • Measure distances and areas on the Map view
  • Use it as the base layer under annotations, contours, and design overlays
  • Export it as a GeoTIFF for GIS, or a flattened image for a report

Resolution is set by your capture — lower flights and tighter overlap produce a sharper orthomosaic.
